After yesterday’s fishing excursion, asking the Resident Evil Facebook page if they would be interested in a Resident Evil 2 remake — the response being an unsurprising and seemingly unanimous “YES” — a representative from Capcom’s R&D Division 1 going by the name of “H” took to the forums again with this message:

Hi Resident Evil fans! This is H from Capcom R&D Division 1!

Wow…!!

I was told by my boss to check out the post by “R&D Division 1” on the Resident Evil Facebook page, and THIS IS AMAZING….

Thank you so much for your passion and continued support for Resident Evil brand!

He was also telling me…”can YOU make a worth seeing game to answer these fans full of passion???”

This order actually makes me SUPER excited…!!!

Then this morning, “H” shared this message:

Hello RE fans! This is H again!

Right after the RE HD Remaster project was finished, I actually started putting together my ideas for this “RE2 Project”. So, I just brushed it up and went to see my boss to present the basic concept of the project already …

He then included the following image:

So, to recap:

  • Jan. 14, 2003: GameCube owners, heretofore treated to the very first Resident Evil remake and the entirely new Resident Evil 0, express disappointment in the straight PS1 port of Resident Evil 2.
  • 2003 to 2015: The collective world expresses disappointment in the absence of a remastered version of Resident Evil 2.
  • July 31, 2015: Less than two days after asking fans if they were (still) interested in a remake of the survival horror classic, a conveniently pre-existing ideas document makes it into the hands of a “boss” at Capcom.

Correction: This article originally referred to a “straight PS2 port of Resident Evil 2” in the timeline. The GameCube version of Resident Evil 2 was a port of the PlayStation original. We’ve edited the story to reflect this.
